The daring-to-be-different quartet that is Eyelash is one of the most exciting rock ‘n’ roll bands in London and Britain at large right now. OK, so you might not have heard of them before, but that is precisely the reason why you need to check them out ASAP, for the quality of the fourteen songs on their debut album is just phenomenal. A long-playing masterpiece that was a year in the making, it begins with the attention-craving ‘What Is It You Need?’ that breaks into a sweat over the riff-roaring might of ‘Blood On My Blue Jeans’ which wields so much energy that resistance to its proactive vibes couldn’t be more futile.
Prominently featuring their ‘Bow To The People’ single, other album highlights include ‘I Was Born The Year Punk Died’ (with its cutting, semi-spiteful lyric ‘I’m only good to you because you might be useful to me later’) and the infectiously urgent ‘You Respond.’ However, it’s the anthemic ‘Good Times’ that perhaps best sums up Eyelash, for it’s all about living one’s life to the full on a daily basis and refusing to submit to mundanity with frontwoman Fe Salomon insisting that ‘If riches mean beauty then riches don’t suit me’ while guitarist Ru Cook lays down yet another quality riff.
So, while we can obviously all do without the recession that’s currently afflicting the economy, Eyelash’s ‘Recession’ must be embraced without hesitation. To deny it its power and glory would be the greatest disservice imaginable to the band and their life-enhancing brand of racy rock ‘n’ roll.
